About us

In 1991, Banu Rădulescu (1924–1998) founded the Memoria Cultural Foundation, a non-governmental, non-profit organization (with Ștefan Augustin Doinaș and Adrian Marino serving as Vice Presidents) dedicated to developing editorial and educational projects, including the publication of Memoria – The Journal of Arrested Thought, which has been published quarterly since 1990. The Foundation was established to promote and disseminate internationally Romanian spiritual and cultural values that suffered under totalitarian regimes. This initiative also led to the creation of the Memoria Cultural Foundation Publishing House.

In 1997, the publishing house released its first book (according to the General Catalogue of the National Library of Romania): Nicole Valery-Grossu: A Light in the Darkness of Romanian Exile, by Cicerone Ionițoiu, with a foreword by Banu Rădulescu.

The Memoria Cultural Foundation Publishing House is dedicated to recovering, preserving, and promoting recent historical memory by bringing forward testimonies, scholarly studies, and critical reflections that contribute to a deeper understanding of Romania’s history over the last seventy years. Through memoirs, research works, and analytical volumes, the publishing house contributes to the understanding of the past and to the development of a civic consciousness grounded in truth and responsibility. It promotes cultural dialogue and the exchange of ideas, facilitating a broader international understanding of Romania’s recent history and encouraging the circulation of cultural values and historical memory across borders. Through collaborations with cultural institutions and human rights organizations in Romania and abroad, the publishing house supports the development of civic awareness based on truth, solidarity, and responsibility.

Since 1997, the Memoria Cultural Foundation Publishing House has published 98 volumes, including memoirs, interviews, studies on communism in Romania and Europe, novels, graphic novels, journals, and books in French.

The publishing house distributes its books and the journal Memoria – The Journal of Arrested Thought through a network of partner bookstores, including Humanitas, Cărturești, Byzantine Bookstore (Bucharest), Sophia Bookstore (Bucharest), and the Babeș-Bolyai University Bookstore (Cluj-Napoca). Publications are also available through museum shops such as the Iuliu Maniu Memorial House (Bădăcin), the Criș Country Museum (Oradea), the Pitești Prison Memorial, and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance (Sighetu Marmației), as well as online through Libris.ro and eMAG.ro.

Editorial projects are promoted through both in-person events and digital platforms. Activities include book and film presentations, debates, workshops, book launches, and exhibitions. In 2026, several public cultural events are being organized to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Memoria Cultural Foundation Publishing House. Communication and dissemination are also carried out through the Foundation’s websites, social media channels, and the social media accounts of project members and institutional partners. The publishing house and the journal maintain an active online presence through their websites and social media platforms, reaching more than 4,000 followers, while collaborations with schools, high schools, and universities further extend their audience.

Over the years, the publishing house’s projects have been presented at major symposia, conferences, festivals, and educational programmes, including the International Symposium “The Pitești Experiment” (PERT), organized by the Argeș Branch of the Memoria Cultural Foundation; the Congress of the Association of Former Political Prisoners of Romania; the Râșnov Film and Histories Festival (FFIR), where the Foundation is a partner; and the Astra Summer School in Râșnov, which it co-organizes. The Foundation also participates regularly in national book fairs such as Gaudeamus and collaborates with numerous cultural institutions, including the George Enescu Philharmonic, the Civic Academy Foundation, the Museum of Communist Horrors in Romania, Friedrich Schiller House of Culture (Bucharest), Humanitas Publishing House, Vremea Publishing House, the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the Writers’ Union of Romania, the Romanian Library in Freiburg, and C&N Publishing House in Berlin.

Throughout its activity, the Foundation and the journal have received numerous distinctions and awards, including the Diploma and Medal “A Decade of Struggle for Democracy” awarded by the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu (2000), in recognition of outstanding contributions to the promotion of democracy and the rule of law; the “Honorary Record” distinction awarded by the Ministry of Interior (2000); the Ariel Award for Journal of the Year (2009); the Special Prize of PEN Romania (2015); the “Iacob Negruzzi” Award for Best Literary Journal awarded by Convorbiri Literare (2020); and the Diploma of Excellence awarded by Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava, where the Foundation was Guest of Honour at the 11th edition of the Alma Mater Librorum International Book Fair in May 2025.

All publications issued by the Memoria Cultural Foundation Publishing House comply with professional and research ethics standards. Manuscripts are selected and evaluated through rigorous procedures that ensure the accuracy, integrity, and relevance of content. The editorial process includes source verification, critical assessment of manuscripts, and, where appropriate, consultation with specialists in order to guarantee scholarly quality and adherence to ethical principles.

Publications issued by the Foundation regularly receive critical reviews, particularly in Memoria – The Journal of Arrested Thought, where they are analyzed from historical, memorial, and historiographical perspectives. These reviews highlight their documentary value, the authenticity of testimonies, and their contribution to the recovery of memory related to communist repression, confirming both their scholarly and cultural relevance.

The Foundation’s press dossier demonstrates a substantial and sustained critical reception. Reviews and analyses have appeared in leading Romanian cultural journals such as România Literară, Observator Cultural, and Luceafărul de Dimineață, complemented by articles, interviews, chronicles, and event reports reflecting the interest of both cultural and academic communities in the themes promoted by the publishing house.

The press dossier also serves as an important record of the public visibility and impact of the Foundation’s editorial activities. It brings together media appearances in cultural publications, mainstream media, and institutional platforms in Romania and abroad. Organized primarily in chronological order, it highlights the continuity of the publishing house’s presence in the public sphere and the sustained interest in its core themes, particularly those related to the memory of communism and recent history. The materials included—reviews, chronicles, interviews, thematic articles, and event reports—illustrate the diversity of critical reception and confirm the cultural and scholarly relevance of the publishing house’s publications. The constant presence of the Foundation’s work in prestigious journals and other media outlets contributes to strengthening its editorial credibility and to the external validation of its cultural mission. Overall, the press dossier functions both as an archive of visibility and as an indicator of public impact, supporting the publishing house’s role as an active promoter of historical memory and civic values.

  1. Evaluare editorială și etică;
  2. Evaluare științifică (peer-review);
  3. Revizuirea traducerilor.

  • calitatea cercetării;
  • relevanța pentru domeniul de cercetare vizat;
  • originalitatea, metodologia și noutatea pentru domeniul de cercetare;

  • acceptarea și recomandarea de publicare a lucrării;
  • acceptarea cu revizuiri (în cazul acesta referenții transmit editorului observațiile lor, care la rândul său le va transmite autorului/autorilor, fără a comunica însă numele referenților);
  • respingerea manuscrisului.

  • grad didactic/cercetare minim conferențiar/C.S. II;
